Chauncey Hugh Stigand wrote this book of 29 East African folktales together with his wife, Nancy Stigand. Stigard was an officer in the British Army and a British colonial official in Africa; before writing this book, he had served in British Somaliland and in British East Africa, and he would later serve in northern Africa. Stigand translated the stories in this book from Swahili tales that he collected from storytellers in eastern Africa.
