This Victorian-era dramedy was adapted by playwright/critic John Oxenford from Eugene Scribe and Ernst Legouvé’s “Les doigts de fée” (“Fairy Fingers.”) The original play was first performed by the Comédie-Française in 1861. It tells the story of an impoverished young noblewoman who scandalizes her blue-blooded kinsmen by deciding to work for a living. She assumes a false name and enters the world of high fashion, becoming one of Paris’ most sought-after couturiers. Complications of mistaken identity and romantic misunderstandings ensue.
